Schiff Hardin LLP is pleased to announce new leadership teams for two of the firm’s prominent practice groups, Litigation and Dispute Resolution and Environmental.

The Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Group will be led by Partner Maggie Hickey. Partners Matt Mock and Larry Heftman will serve as deputy practice group leaders.

Maggie, who also leads the White Collar Defense and Government Investigations Team, is a former Illinois Executive Inspector General. During her tenure at Schiff, she was appointed as the independent monitor to oversee implementation of the multi-year consent decree for the Chicago Police Department and was tapped by the Chicago Board of Education to lead an independent review of the school district’s sexual harassment policies and procedures. Maggie was named a Law360 MVP for White Collar in 2019 and has been recognized by Crain’s Chicago Business, Chicago Lawyer, and Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. Clients have described her as "an extraordinarily talented lawyer," who "gets to the heart of legal issues very quickly," according to the 2020 Chambers USA guide.

Matt focuses his practice on energy and environmental, complex commercial, and antitrust litigation, as well as class action defense, internal investigations, and antitrust counseling. His trial experience includes representing a public utility in a Clean Air Act enforcement matter brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, with over $1 billion at stake.

Larry is a trial lawyer and commercial litigator whose practice includes fiduciary litigation, shareholder disputes, director and officer liability, audit malpractice and class action defense. He recently served as co-counsel in a federal bench trial that led to a $625 million damages award. Larry also devotes substantial time to pro bono legal work including through the firm’s partnership with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services and in federal civil rights litigation.

The Environmental Practice Group will be led by Partners Dan Deeb and Josh More.

Dan has deep experience with the Clean Water Act, including NPDES, 404, and 401 permitting and litigation. He has successfully defended CWA permit appeals, citizen suits, and governmental enforcement actions. As a former clerk for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance, Dan is a frequent lecturer and has written on environmental legal issues for a variety of publications. He serves on the Environmental Law Advisory Board for the Indiana University Mauer School of Law and the Grand Victoria Foundation’s Vital Lands Advisory Board.

Josh advises clients on air, water, and waste enforcement, permitting, and compliance issues, and has extensive experience with both state and federal coal combustion residual (CCR) programs. He has also served as trial counsel in complex Clean Air Act litigation, including an enforcement action brought under the New Source Review enforcement initiative, and has litigated before federal, state, and local judicial bodies. Josh is a frequent speaker and writer on coal ash issues.
