Schiff successfully secured asylum for a pro bono client who had faced persecution for political activities as a community organizer in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Our client was an active member of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) during this Central African country’s 2016 presidential elections. After state police accused him of crimes against the state, George was sentenced to life in prison, where guards tortured and beat him due to his association with the UDPS.
After nine months in prison, George escaped during a prisoner riot and fled to neighboring Angola. He eventually made his way to the U.S., where he applied for and has now secured asylum.
Working in partnership with the National Immigrant Justice Center, the Schiff team included David Pi, Christopher Gerardi, and Gregory Dickinson.
