Biomass-to-Energy Plant Takes Root

  • Client: Renewable energy company
  • Date: 2006 - present
  • Location: Illinois

Summary:

Schiff Hardin assisted with the overall strategy for the state of Illinois' first biomass-to-energy facility. This plant will use both green wood and wood waste to generate electricity. The plans for the new plant involve the conversion of a shuttered municipal waste incinerator with a legacy of operational difficulties and troubling public perception. Significant work with regulators was required to develop a new protocol for managing fuel production; this protocol is currently used by the state to assess new waste-to-energy proposals. The plan to use the plant for a new biomass-to-energy facility drew significant press coverage and political attention.

Attorneys in our Environmental practice group guided the client through the legislative and permitting process, and assisted with the development of a community outreach and communication plan.
