Landfill Gas-to-Energy Project

  • Client: Illinois county
  • Date: April 2010
  • Location: Illinois

Summary:

Schiff Hardin represented an Illinois county in negotiating and documenting a landfill gas-to-electric energy construction and operation agreement.

The county will use Department of Energy (DOE) energy efficiency block grant money to assist in a portion of the financing of the project. In return, the county will be paid by a renewable energy company for the landfill gas (generated by the decaying organic material that otherwise would have been wasted as flared gas) and will share in the price received for the electricity when the price reaches a certain threshold.

The project may be expanded with the addition of more capacity in the future. The projected electrical output of more than 18 million kilowatt hours a year will be delivered to utility distribution lines, and is enough to meet the needs of more than 2,000 households in the county.
