Schiff Hardin LLP Receives 2007 Animal Protection Litigation Award from the Humane Society of the United States

April 7, 2008

The Humane Society of the United States ("HSUS") presented Schiff Hardin with a 2007 Animal Protection Litigation Award, "honoring outstanding pro bono litigation on behalf of animals."

This award salutes Schiff Hardin for contributing more than 200 hours of pro bono service to animal welfare litigation in 2007. In particular this honor recognizes Schiff Hardin partners Bruce A. Wagman (San Francisco office), Catherine M. Masters and Neil Lloyd (Chicago office) for their work on Cavel International, Inc. v. Madigan, in which the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld the Illinois Horse Meat Act. That law bans slaughtering horses for human consumption. Schiff Hardin represented the Humane Society of the United States, which participated in the case in both the district court and on appeal as amicus curiae. This lawsuit effectively ended the horse slaughter for human consumption industry in the United States.

Other Schiff Hardin lawyers who contributed extensive pro bono time and achieved significant litigation success on behalf of animals in 2007 include partner Walter H. Bush and associate Christopher B. Freeman, who are both resident in the firm's Atlanta office.
