John J. Voortman, a highly respected retired Schiff Hardin partner who concentrated his practice in antitrust law, passed away on February 12, 2012, at age 80.
Mr. Voortman, who was fluent in Russian, served in the intelligence branch of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After leaving the military in 1954 he completed his undergraduate studies at Michigan State University in 1956 and then earned a law degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1959. He then entered government service as an attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice in the Appellate Section of the Antitrust Division. Subsequently, he worked at three law firms in Washington, D.C. and Chicago before joining Schiff Hardin as an associate in 1973. He was elected a partner in 1973. He retired in 1992.
