Robert S. Appel

Of Counsel

Robert S. Appel has a diverse practice involving international business matters, representation of architects, engineers and other construction industry participants, and a full range of U.S. corporate and commercial activity, including contested matters. For example, he recently represented a prominent American architectural firm in an arbitration in Paris involving a construction project in Spain. He is also nationally known in the fields of securities transfer and record keeping and Article 8 of the Uniform Commercial Code covering investment securities.

For many years, Mr. Appel has been counsel for the Securities Transfer Association, a securities industry trade association, and served as a mediator for cases pending in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Mr. Appel has particular expertise in French law as a result of his French commercial law doctorate and practice experience.

In recognition of his contributions to furthering cultural ties between France and the United States and promoting the French language, in 2004 Mr. Appel was made a Knight (Chevalier) in the French National Order of Merit (l'Ordre National du Mérite) by then President Jacques Chirac.

Experience

  • Helped lead a firm team that represented a French conglomerate establishing a U.S. subsidiary to engage in manufacturing in the United States and Mexico for the aerospace industry.
  • Represented an American architectural firm in the negotiation of agreements for the design and construction of a railway station in Naples, Italy, and the same firm in the prosecution of copyright violation claims.
  • Represented a French architectural firm in connection with the design of several high-rise projects in Manhattan.
  • Represented a French national in connection with a will contest in New York.

Mr. Appel serves on the Board of the French Institute Alliance Française.
