K. William Neuman concentrates his practice in real estate. He has represented both sponsors and investors in the formation and operation of numerous large and medium sized real estate investment funds and private equity joint ventures.
Mr. Neuman's practice has encompassed a broad range of real estate and business activities, including the acquisition, development, financing, operation and disposition of:
- Low-rise to high-rise office buildings
- Industrial projects
- Regional and strip shopping centers
- Hotels
- Planned developments (including residential, commercial and mixed use condominium projects)
- Entitled residential and commercial development properties
He has counseled numerous institutional and private developers, lenders, investors, owners, operating businesses and construction companies. He has represented owners, investors, landlords, ground lessors and tenants in highly sophisticated tax and accounting driven development, joint venture and leasing activities, tax deferred exchanges, and development of environmentally sensitive or contaminated land.
Experience
Mr. Neuman's experience includes:
- Continuing representation of the general partner in the formation and financing of its ninth multi-tiered fund, which collectively represents an aggregate committed equity capital of nearly $3 billion with a variety of financing methods, including most recently, subscription line financing
- Representing the manager in the formation of a multi-tiered joint venture to acquire and redevelop a major headquarters building in San Francisco
- Representing a major credit card processing company with regard to a multitude of leasing and subleasing transactions
- Representing a multi-national corporation in the disposition of a subsidiary's headquarters campus (which Mr. Neuman had earlier assisted in developing)
- Representing the ownership of a high-rise San Francisco office building with respect to its management and leasing transactions
- Representing numerous commercial and industrial users in the development of campus and other facilities, including high-tech and biotech facilities
Pro Bono Activities
Mr. Neuman has been actively involved in pro bono real estate and corporate matters with various community nonprofit organizations, including:

- Rehabilitation Services of Northern California
- ACLU of Northern California
His pro bono work has been recognized frequently, including the Humanitarian Award from the Berkeley Food & Housing Project.
He has also served on the board of directors of the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation.
Previous Experience
Before joining Schiff Hardin, Mr. Neuman was a shareholder from 1981 to 2008 in the Real Estate Group at Heller Ehrman LLP, where he served in many senior management positions, including managing shareholder of the San Francisco office. Previously, he served as a judge and senior prosecutor in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1972 to 1976, retiring from the Naval Reserve as a Captain.
