Thomas R. Wechter concentrates his practice in tax planning for individuals, corporations, and venture capital and private equity firms. He focuses on complex transactions involving acquisitions, dispositions, spin-offs, and new venture investments.
He also handles matters involving deficiencies and refunds in U.S. Tax Court, U.S. Claims Court, and U.S. District Courts.
Mr. Wechter served as a senior trial attorney in the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) from 1968 to 1974. While at the DOJ, he tried more than 100 cases, both jury and bench trials, including the leading case of Hemp Brothers v. United States. The decision eventually was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mr. Wechter's experience also included a number of industry-leading cases which involved extensive expert opinion testimony presented to the court by Mr. Wechter, as well as opposing experts' testimony which he neutralized on cross-examination.
In addition, he served as the DOJ Tax Division liaison with Congress regarding revisions to the Internal Revenue Code on the taxation of corporations.
