National Immigrant Justice Center

Schiff Hardin attorneys and staff are very active on a pro bono and leadership basis in the National Immigrant Justice Center. The Center ensures human rights protections and access to justice for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers through direct legal services, policy reform, impact litigation, and public education.

Since its founding, the Center has been unique in building on the foundation of client representation to promote national systemic reform.

Representative of the cases we have handled over the past decade is a current client who is seeking refuge from the Republic of the Congo, where he would face torture and death because of his membership in a minority ethnic group.

Dorchester Detention Correctional Facility

In his pro bono work with the Dorchester Detention Correctional Facility in Dorchester, Maryland, associate William Lavarco performed an audit to ascertain whether immigrant detainees were being treated consistent with Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) regulations as part of an American Bar Association (ABA) sponsored delegation. He co-authored a report that was submitted to the ABA and ICE and received a letter of commendation from the ABA president.
