Illinois Governor's Cemetery Investigation Task Force Chaired by Schiff Hardin Partner |
 |
When crimes came to light this summer involving the moving and dumping of bodies at a Chicago area African-American cemetery the resting place of Emmet Till and Dinah Washington, among many others a stunned local community began asking questions. |
How could this happen? Who was responsible? What could be done to prevent this from happening again?
One of the people they asked was Patricia Brown Holmes, a Schiff Hardin partner and former judge with South Side roots and family interred at the site, Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois. As much as anyone, she was distressed by the profound disrespect shown to the people commended to Burr Oak's care.
"Life is all we have," says Patricia, reflecting on the helplessness felt by many in the wake of the scandal. In response to that feeling, and the questions being put to her, she willingly accepted a call from Governor Pat Quinn to chair a task force charged with reviewing the affair and making recommendations to prevent its recurrence.

Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation Hires New Deputy General Counsel
Schiff Hardin recently bid farewell to Marla Shade Harris, formerly of the firm's White Collar Crime and Corporate Compliance group. On August 17, Marla started a new job as Deputy General Counsel for the Division of Banking at the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. The office regulates state-chartered banks and, as one might expect, has been busy recently. She looks forward to "an exciting opportunity" at the forefront of repairing the financial system in Illinois, and remains in contact with her former colleagues at Schiff Hardin, only occasionally bragging about her vastly improved office with an unobstructed view of Lake Michigan.

American Civil Liberties Union Honors Schiff Hardin Partner
Schiff Hardin partner Heidi Dalenberg will receive the Edwin A. Rothschild Civil Liberties Award from the Illinois ACLU this October, for long-time service to ACLU initiatives. Heidi has been selected for her work on the "B.H." case, a lawsuit against the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services filed decades ago by the Illinois ACLU on behalf of thousands of children in foster care to protect their due process rights. For the past 20 years, Heidi has acted as co-counsel with the Illinois ACLU to enforce the terms of a consent decree in the face of DCFS inaction and statewide budget cuts. Though she says she feels almost uncomfortable receiving an award for work she finds so personally rewarding, she is gratified to accept this honor from an organization that she values very highly. |
