My Friend Sonia Sotomayor: Patricia Pileggi Reminisces
Patricia Pileggi is a partner in Schiff Hardin's New York office, where she focuses her practice on white collar criminal defense. The path of her career has led her from the U.S. Department of Justice's Tax Division through more than 20 years at the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of New York, a jurisdiction encompassing Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. While working there as a Senior Litigation Counsel in the early 1990s, she was introduced to an extraordinary woman who remains her friend to this day: Sonia Sotomayor.
Though she is known to the world now as the most recently inducted United States Supreme Court justice, at the time Justice Sotomayor was a litigator at a Manhattan law firm. She lived on the same block as Ms. Pileggi and Dawn Cardi, a mutual friend who introduced them, in the diverse Brooklyn neighborhood of Carroll Gardens.

Everybody Wins! Atlanta Office Volunteers "Do Lunch" and Promote LiteracyPower lunches are routine for members of Schiff Hardin's Atlanta office. Each week, several attorneys and staff members spend their lunchtimes mentoring students through Everybody Wins! Atlanta. The organization — a local affiliate of the national non-profit Everybody Wins! — promotes literacy by pairing students who are at risk for academic failure with volunteers from the business community.
Schiff Hardin associate Tamera Woodard volunteered with EW before joining the firm. She recently recruited attorneys Laura McGuffey, Wendy Hart and Danielle Cook, and staff members Chris Washington and Hope Gant to "do lunch." By volunteering with EW, they are helping to bridge the literacy gap, one student — and sandwich — at a time.
