Brian J. Neff
Counsel
Brian J. Neff concentrates his practice in general litigation, both civil and criminal, including the defense of class actions, reinsurance litigation, tort and products liability cases, and complex white collar criminal matters.
Mr. Neff has represented insurance carriers and other companies against class action lawsuits, including those that assert nationwide classes. He has been involved in reinsurance matters addressing issues such as:
- Estimation of long-tail claims
- Follow the settlements
- Managing general agent agreements
- Service of suit clauses
His criminal defense experience includes matters at both the trial and appellate levels.
Mr. Neff has handled numerous commercial disputes in state and federal court, including claims for fraud and breach of contract.

Pro Bono Activities
Mr. Neff is very active in pro bono work. He is currently part of a team of attorneys seeking habeas corpus and other relief for a number of inmates held at the Guantánamo Bay detainment camp.
Previous Experience
Prior to joining Schiff Hardin, Mr. Neff served in the Special Hearings Unit of the Office of the Public Defender for the State of New Jersey, representing clients at the trial and appellate levels.
Earlier, he was an associate at two New Jersey law firms, where he represented clients in a broad variety of cases, including commercial, tort, labor and employment, and criminal litigation. He served concurrently as a part-time pool attorney for the Office of the Public Defender for the State of New Jersey.
